Subject: Meeting with Donald Schmitt - 11/20/94
Date: Sun, 27 Nov 1994 13:08:16 UNDEFINED
Organization: University of Wisconsin
MEETING WITH DONALD SCHMITT 11/20/94, SUNDAY
On November 20, 1994, Donald Schmitt, co-author with Kevin Randle
of the book "The Truth about the UFO Crash at Roswell," (c) 1994,
met quietly with a small coterie of supporters in the Milwaukee
area for a pre Thanks Giving get together. Here are the more
interesting highlights distilled from an audio tape I made with
Don Shmitt's permission. I am responsible for the following
personal interpretation. Any inaccuracies are totally
unintentional on my part.
* THE SHOWTIME ROSWELL MOVIE will be coming out in video tape
in January. It will then be broadcast on Network TV in
Spring. (I don't know which network.)
* SPEILBERG RUMORS CONCERNING ROSWELL. Schmitt mentioned that
he continues to hear more and more unconfirmed reports that
Speilberg may be interested in producing his own version of
the Roswell incident. One hot theory suggests Speilberg
might like to debut the speculated Roswell production in
major theaters in July 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of
the legendary incident. Again, this remains an unconfirmed
rumor, though Mr. Schmitt, Co-writer to the Showtime
exclusive made for TV movie "Roswell," did give me the
distinct impression that no one would be greater pleased
than he if the current gossip turns out to be accurate.
* SHERIDAN CAVITT'S RECENT COMMENTS CONFLICTS WITH SCHMITT &
RANDLE'S PERSONALLY TAPED INTERVIEW(S). Donald made the
comment that they have Captain Sheridan Cavitt's own
personal testimony on tape and that it conflicts with what
he is currently saying.
* MAJOR AIR FORCE MISTAKE IN RESEARCHING HISTORICAL
DOCUMENTATION. Apparently, the Air Force report apparently
never bothered to check the meteorological records on the
day(s) the secret Mogul balloon launch(es) were alleged to
have been executed. Randle & Schmitt checked all balloon
launch dates in question and discovered that the wind
patterns, particularly relating to the jet stream, could not
have carried the balloons to the crash site based on where
the launchings were executed. But wait! It gets better
than that! According to Schmitt they have the original
launch logs of all the Mogul flights, and the most likely
launches to fit the crash theory, #9 or #4, had been
scrubbed. They never flew. Even the flight director,
Charles Moore said it couldn't have been Project Mogul.
According to Schmitt, the Air Force report has made a major
blunder by going out on a limb theorizing the Roswell crash
was due to a Mogul balloon flight.
* CREDULOUS STATEMENT MADE BY AN AIR FORCE INVESTIGATING
SPOKESPERSON. Donald mentioned a revealing statement
attributed to what one of the Air Force's investing
spokesperson, a Major David Thursten (sp?), was heard to
have said concerning the well documented Roswell newspaper
reports back in July 1947. Thursten apparently once said
that he had heard "rumors" that there had been such a press
release concerning a UFO crash near Roswell, but that HE
PERSONALLY HAD NOT SEEN ANY EVIDENCE OF SUCH A RELEASE,
meaning he had not even bothered to perform a simple search
of news paper accounts of the time. Donald felt this was a
clear example of the Air Force investigation team's own
ignorance, apathy, and/or reluctance to even review
documentation readily available in the public domain.
* DECEPTIVE-LIKE TACTICS USED TO AVERT ATTENTION AWAY FROM
POTENTIALLY SENSITIVE ISSUES AVOIDED IN AIR FORCE REPORT.
Donald stated that Cornel Weaver (sp?) who issued the recent
Air Force report apparently modified and/or deleted a number
of questions that had originally been brought up by a chief
investigator, Lt. Mc Andrew (sp?). Apparently, Mc Andrew
personally told Randle & Schmitt that he had raised a number
of questions but that it appeared that Weaver had modified
his portion, essentially removing his queries. Meanwhile,
Mr. Schmitt stated that the press had then been told that
Cornel Weaver had been retired from the Air Force the day
after the Pentagon press conference, meaning he was no
longer available for questioning. Not true, according to
Schmitt. Donald stated that Weaver was simply reassigned to
Langley, Virginia, here he continues in active duty in the
service of his country. Donald claimed that this is one of
the tactics the Air Force used to deliberately deflect
attention away from those who might attempt to follow up on
the particulars of Weaver's report.
* AIR FORCE INVESTIGATION OF ROSWELL CONTINUES DESPITE PUBLIC
CLAIMS THAT FINAL "OFFICIAL" WORD ON SUBJECT HAS BEEN MADE.
Donald claims that some aspect of the original air force
investigation team is apparently still investigating the
incident even though they publicly stated on Sept. 8th that
the "final word" had been written on the Roswell incident.
Apparently, Randle & Shmitt's recent pleas to the Air
Force's investigation team, that they go talk to the actual
witnesses themselves, may have jarred them up. Donald
stated that he has personally heard from a number of the
Roswell witnesses who claim that they have been contacted in
the last couple of months on numerous occasions by the
investigators. Even Jessie Marcel Jr. himself has received
almost a dozen phone calls from the Air Force in the last
five weeks alone, apparently trying to convince Marcel Jr.
that what he saw over forty years ago had to have been a
"balloon." According to Schmitt, all the witnesses are
remaining adamant, sticking to their original stories... "No
sir! What I handled was not of this earth."
* NEW WITNESS TO MAC BRAZEL COLLABORATES STORIES OF HIM BEING
THREATENED. Donald said they have uncovered a new witnesses
who claimed that Mac Brazel apparently showed signs of
having been threatened to keep quiet about the incident.
The witnessed described Mac Brazel, almost twenty years
afterwards, that "Brazel turned stone white," that he could
clearly see Mac was a broken man, that he behaved defeated
and not like his normal self when the Roswell incident was
specifically brought up. Brazel was quoted to have said
"Those people [referring the military] will kill you..."
Brazel was also alleged to have said that he treasured his
life too much to ever say anything about it, a conviction he
kept to his grave. The new witnesses descriptions
collaborates what Brazel's family has already stated, and
continues to bring forth the question of why such strong arm
tactics were necessary simply to cover up a crashed
"balloon." The new witness also mentioned that Mac suddenly
had a new pick up truck which nobody could figure out how he
could have afforded - the implication being that the
government used the "carrot and stick" approach on Brazel.
Other new witnesses also confirm that the government had
"physically grabbed" and kept Mac in incommunicado for a
whole week during the incident.
* PAPERBACK EDITION (REVISED) OF "THE TRUTH ABOUT...ROSWELL"
NOW IN BOOK STORES. I purchased a fresh copy at my local
Borders Book store on November 25th, Friday. I also saw it
at Waldens. The cover is completely redesigned with a green
background and contains updated information not available in
the hard cover edition.
* ROSWELL QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER. The much awaited Roswell
Newsletter of the continuing investigation by Randle &
Schmitt should be hitting subscriber's mailboxes soon.
Schmitt mentioned that they have already started blocking
out the layout of their second edition. For more info
write:
The Roswell Update or Video
P.O. Box 85

* THIRD BOOK ON ROSWELL INVESTIGATION PLANNED? Randle and
Schmitt have been asked to write a third book on Roswell
where they will respond specifically to the statements and
theories presented by the recent Air Force report.
OTHER INTERESTING BITS OF ANECDOTAL INFORMATION WORTH MENTIONING:
* CRYING WOLF CAN BE HIGHLY REVEALING IN A SERENDIPITOUS WAY!
Schmitt told an interesting story which in my opinion is
insightful concerning the gut reaction many people may
experience when they finally realize that many UFO reports,
like the Roswell crash, could be true. Donald relayed the
story of an ironic phone call he received from a good friend
of his, a prolific UFO writer, a person who has been
involved in investigating the phenomenon since his teen age
years. The UFO investigator called Mr. Schmitt one evening
in the midst of another series of rumors concerning the
possibility that there was going to be a major
"announcement" from Washington DC, apparently concerning the
authentication of certain UFO reports. (BTW, the major
government UFO "announcement" related to this particular
story, as you might suspect, turned out to be a false rumor
as has often happened in the field of UFO investigation.)
But before this particular rumor "announcement" evaporated
Donald relayed the story of how the voice of his friend "was
shaking with fear." Donald stressed that, again, this was a
person who was involved in the investigating and writing of
UFO reports for almost 25 years of his life. In spite of
the fact that he was a well seasoned veteran he told Donald
that he "hated to admit it" but for the first time in his
life he was "frightened," frightened that it was beginning
to look as if these UFO reports were actually going to be
authenticated.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea for all of us to try
imagining for a few seconds a scenario similar to what
Donald's friend must have experienced during that -War of
the Worlds- like evening.
* WILLIAM SHATNER. A ROSWELL SUPPORTER? Last but not least!
For all you Star Trek trivia Fans, William Shatner
apparently has become interested in the Roswell incident.
It would seem that Shatner and Schmitt have serendipitously
bumped into each other on several occasions while Donald was
out on the lecture circuit. Shatner was found sitting in
Schmitt's audience at least once. Now, Please! Don't start
unfounded rumors! I stress here that I don't know if this
means or even remotely implies that Shatner might be
interested in doing some kind of public relations work
concerning the Roswell incident. I doubt it. Apparently
rumors including written accounts to the effect that Shatner
had seen a UFO are unfounded according to what William told
Shmitt privately. What could I possibly add to this late
breaking revelation... Kirk "went down with the bridge"
like a true Star Fleet officer should.

Stay tuned!
